Kid Fitness

Activities for Youngsters

A kid fitness program instills good habits
in order to grow up to be a healthy, active adult.

At a young age, my children were alway ready to play, anytime. They were active most of the day - running, hopping, playing, exploring – so much so that I often wondered where they got all that energy!

During adolescence, however, TV, homework, and other nonphysical work replaces physical activity, unless you as a parent initiate a fun aspect to chores and activities.

Different Stages

Before we begin a fun kid fitness program for our different age groups, here are several kinds of activities that are suitable for children of different age groups:

  • Under 2 years: Since children at this age are naturally active, I let them play when the time avails itself. Be careful not to use food as a reward, though.

Overeating is a national concern, and we need to prevent that from happening to our young people by encouraging nutrition and fitness, hand in hand.

  • 2-5 years: Have games and fitness that involves the parents as well as the kids. A family who plays together, stays together! Help your youngsters develop their motor skills.
  • 5-8 years: Group sports like baseball, soccer, and basketball are good for kid fitness and also help children develop social skills.
  • 8-10 years: At this age, my children were very fond of team sports, and it's terrific to encourage these activities.
  • 10-13 years: Many children reach puberty at this age. Sports should be a part of their routine, and games should be played for a competitiveness spirit as well as for fun and maintaining fitness.
  • 13-17 years: Kids should learn the importance of playing for fun and as a healthy habit that will keep many health related problems at bay.

Apart from regular sports like baseball, tennis, basketball, and soccer, I also encourage my youngsters to participate in their choice of fitness activities, such as dance, swimming, bicycling, running, skating, and aerobics.

Encourage fun activities that also have great fitness value; this will ensure that your kids will make their own decision to lead an active life by choice, rather than being prodded by a health-conscious parent!
